Ilirska Bistrica: Region and Landscape

The CLC of Ilirska Bistrica is created within the lands of municipality of Ilirska Bistrica. This area had a great significance in the past, but later it has lost its importance.

Situed in south western Slovenia, its attractions and special features are very diverse: nature, architectures, sport activities etc. The varied cultural landscape and the architectural and settlement heritage have created the distinctive landscape, which has been due to non-compliance –pretty devaluated in the last years.

The municipality is proud to have many beautiful and diverse places to show in any time of the year. These include natural sights, such as intermittent stream Susec, Brkini area, Slivinik, Mola lake, interesing Masun, Sviscaki and also cultural and historical sights, like Prem Castle, Kette’s memorial room, Novak’s mill, Schonburg Waldenburg Villa and so on…

The municipality features various traditional ethnographic events like Carnival and other celebrations. Different villages are even nowadays known for special religious and secular ceremonies.

Cultural and Natural Heritage

The area of Ilirska Bistricais full of architectual and historical places of interest. Such as Sviščaki Centre, the starting point for an assault on Snežnik. The area has a very favourable climate especially for people with respiratory problems. From Sviščaki a forest road leads to the abandoned forester's hamlet of Mašun (12km;1022m). The wide road network offers a great starting point for bicycling and hiking and cross country skiing in the winter.

Regarding culture and costums, there the oldest slovenian mask of Škoromati. The museum of “Škoromati” explain the cultural carnival tradition on the periphery of Brkini and Čičarija, whose origin dates back to the 14th century.

The Village Prem, above the left bank of the Reka River North west of Ilirska Bistrica, is protected as a cultural monument because of its architecture. The village stretches between castle Prem on one side and the parish church on the other side.

In the old town of Ilirska Bistrica is hidden pathway leads to the source of the waterfall Sušec which flows beneath Snežnik. Sušecis the karst spring and appears only during major rainfall (fall and winter). A little further from the waterfall are remains of the former castle Feistritz.
